adverts.ie Map

Here’s a map showing where people are buying and selling items using adverts.ie, powered by Google Maps. To get locations for each county, I used John Handelaar’s town/city to geocode utility for Ireland and IShareMaps town/city to geocode utility for the UK (for Northern Ireland), along with the names of the county towns from Wikipedia.

Edit: It took a while to gather these geocodes, so I’m pasting here for those who may find them useful (for counties in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland).

  1. Hi John,

I would be curious to know more about how you where able to build this Google map onto your site. I have two other questions about it.

    1. When you click on a county link, Louth for example, it tells me there are 28 adverts in Louth, but then it has a link to Go To All Adverts in Galway. This “Go To All Adverts in Galway” link appears to be on the markers for each county. Should the link not read “Go To All Adverts in (respective county)”, or are you just very keen to promote th Galway adverst ;)

    2. Your link in your post for “John Handelaar’s town/city to geocode utility for Ireland” is dead.

Good work on Adverts.ie, I love it.

    Steve

  2. Hi John,
I have noticed a bug, when you hover over a county for every county when you click the letter it says Show adverts in Galway

  3. Nice work John but there appears to be a bug – regardless of which marker I click on I get the link for Galway. Eg. when I click on the Waterford Marker I get this –

    “Waterford:
There are 20 adverts in this county.
    Show all adverts in Galway.”

By the way Geonames.org is also a very good resource for geocoding with detail to to small county towns and even villages.

  4. Hehe – just as I was about to fix the Galway bug, our network went down for maintenance – fixed!

Steve – I only started reading about Google Maps yesterday so it really is very straightforward – first, I read up at:

    http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/

Then, I coded a bit of PHP to pull a total count of products in the database matching a particular county, and drew a marker (using Google’s letter icons) for each county (town) using the coordinates listed above. If you look at the HTML source code for map.php you can copy and paste the JavaScript sections and fiddle around with it yourself.
